
Joseph P. Larson III is the Vice President, OpenAI for Government, where he leads the company’s engagement with local, state, federal, and international government partners.
Previously, he served as Senior Vice President and Chief of Staff at Anduril Industries, a defense technology company specializing in advanced autonomous systems. From 2022 to 2024, he was the inaugural Deputy Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer for Algorithmic Warfare (DCDAO(AW)) within the Office of the Secretary of Defense. In that capacity, he oversaw initiatives in autonomy, AI, and machine learning infrastructure — including the creation of Task Force Lima, the Department of Defense’s generative AI task force — and led the Algorithmic Warfare Cross-Functional Team (Project Maven) at the Pentagon from 2021 to 2022 while on detail from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.
In the private sector, Joseph has held leadership roles spanning data, technology, and national security. At Anduril, he led strategy for joint all-domain command and control, ISR, and battle management. He was previously Head of Business Operations at Tulco Labs, a private equity firm applying machine learning in regulated industries, and earlier served as a Deployment Strategist at Palantir Technologies, focusing on defense, intelligence, and cybersecurity mission support. He began his career practicing antitrust and bankruptcy law at Sidley Austin LLP.
Joseph is also a Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, serving as an intelligence officer with the MAGTF Staff Training Program in Quantico, VA. From 2016 to 2019, he served as Deputy Chief of Project Maven in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security. He is a graduate of the Marine Corps Command and Staff College (DEP) and the U.S. Army War College (DEP).
He holds a J.D. from Stanford Law School, an M.A. in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, and a B.A. in Political Science and History from the University of San Diego.
